Repairable Tiled Stove tiles
The preparable tiles of traditional tiled stove
Old traditional tiled stoves are long lived and the money invested in them is not wasted. One should take care of them. Helsinge offers an opportunity to its clients to have the tiles of their old traditional tiled stoves (from other makers) to be replaced, and we will create a new tile with an utmost care.
The process starts by the client sending us at Helsinge the old tile which is to be copied, carefully packed and safely posted. After we receive the tile, we undertake to map out the wishes of the client carefully so that the end result will be just what the client desires.
The aim, is not to create something identical but individuality according to the spirit of the artisanship. Sometimes a patinated finish is desired. This is achieved with paleness, fluidity, contrasts and small cracks on the surface of the glazing.
Another client might wish for an identical shape, but a variation in colour. This way old and new meet beautifully.
The mould maker then proceeds to form a new plaster-mould, using the old one as a model. The original details and the shape are duplicated into the new mould. After the mould has dried, the artisan begins his careful work. It must be taken into consideration that clay shrinks while it dries as well as in the oven. Some of the details also fade because of the glazing.
When the mould has gotten a stamp of approval, the mould designer prepares as many copies as the client needs, and they are left to slowly dry.
The original colour of every copied tile has to be created again. There are no short cuts, but colour after colour and shade after shade the artisan goes forward in his creative work. The colour will be improved until the desired end result has been achieved, and the client has approved it from the colour palette.
Only at this point does the tile-master prepare the correct quantity of glazing needed for the tiled stove tiles. The tile master collects the tiles that have been either dried or burned, and puts on the glazing by hand, by pouring the glaring liquid over the tiles.
After they come from the kiln, every single item is carefully inspected for high quality, and they are delivered safely from the Helsinge artisan to the client with the originals.
